Using The Breeding Mount*
5. Preparation of the Artificial Vagina (AV)
Perhaps the most critical step in the collection of semen in the artificial vagina is the proper preparation of the AV. Too often this is neglected and the stallion is blamed. It is strongly recommended that you use a Colorado-type AV. They offer a number of advantages and weight of the AV is not a factor with the Breeding Mount. Using a soft, natural rubber outer liner (water jacket) with one of the available disposable inner liners is also recommended. Some stallions will not use some of the disposable inner liners, but even stallions that refused elsewhere rarely refuse the liners available from EBS.
Make sure your liners are installed properly with no twists and as few wrinkles as possible before filling the AV with water. With the valve up, fill the AV completely full of water, close the valve, place a dab of lubricant on the end of the thermometer and insert it deep into the AV. Stallions will vary in preference to the proper temperature, but you will be successful with the temperature in the AV between 44 and 46 degrees centigrade.
When the temperature in the AV reaches 46 or 47 degrees, remove the thermometer, place a sleeve on your arm with a good amount of non-spermicidal lube in and on the back of your hand and lubricate the AV completely and thoroughly. How far you insert your arm depends on the size of your arm and fist and the size of your stallion's penis. Also, some stallions prefer more pressure than others. For an average stallion, you can probably insert your arm a little past the elbow, but for some you may have to insert your arm almost all the way through the AV.
6. Signs of trouble
If your stallion mounts and penetrates the AV and then withdraws check the AV carefully. He may not like the pressure or temperature, or both. If he works the AV thrusting a little but then withdrawing, it may be more pressure than he likes. If he penetrates the AV and does nothing, there may be too little pressure or the Mount is too low, or both. DO NOT PUNISH THE STALLION.
