Using The Breeding Mount*
2. Know your stallion's needs
Experience with and knowledge of your stallion(s) is very important. Some stallions grasp the Mount so tightly with their front legs that some hair will be scraped off the inside of their knees. Silicone sprayed on the Mount in the area where the knees grip will help. Also, applying a lubricant to the inside of the knees just prior to mounting helps prevent this. Professional Choice human knee boots, or braces, protect the stallion's knees and stay in place quite well.
3. Protect the cover from tears
Do not collect a stallion with shoes on until the shoes are either covered with Equi-boot-type covers or tape is applied around the shoes. Shoes will tear the cover.
4. Teaching a stallion to use the mount
At times a young or inexperienced stallion may not understand what is expected of him in mounting. To successfully teach him quickly, place a mare on the offside and parallel to the Mount. When doing this, lead the stallion up to the mare and the Mount at an angle, so that his chest remains against the back of the Mount. By keeping him at a slight angle, when he attempts to mount the mare it is not difficult to pull him around so that his front legs come down over the Mount and he penetrates the artificial vagina (AV). Collection is then completed without incident. Most stallions learn very quickly that a mare beside the Mount is not necessary.
